The Child and Family Clinic: Mindfulness
’You can’t stop the waves but you can learn to surf’ – Jon Kabat Zinn
Mindfulness is a mind-body approach to life, it involves paying attention to thoughts feelings and body sensations in a way that can increase our awareness and compassion, helping us to face the intractable problems that are part of being human.
Mindfulness has many well documented benefits for helping us to cope with the challenges of living. It enables us to take more control over our thoughts, emotions and behaviours which leads to insight and wiser choices.
Research shows that Mindfulness is particularly helpful for:
- Calming the Body & the Mind
- Depression & Anxiety
- Mood Swings & Stress
- Addictive Behaviours
- Eating, Weight & Shape Issues
- Heart Disease
- Chronic Pain & Illness
I became interested in Mindfulness Practice and began to practice myself two and a half years ago. I then trained to teach Mindfulness at the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre. In my own experience and in observing my patients, I have noticed that Mindfulness gives people an insight into the workings of their mind, this then leads to a greater sense of control over thoughts, feelings and behaviour. It can also lead to a greater sense of calm and contentment.

My Background
I have four children and four step-children so I know that family life can be challenging.
I believe that good relationships are very important for the emotional wellbeing of all family members, and for the healthy development of children and teens.
When families work together, this can have a positive impact on everyone.
I also work with parents towards finding ways of co-parenting through separation and divorce so that children do not have to suffer from their parents’ differences.
