The Child and Family Clinic: Parenting
Parenting is a minefield these days, there is so much information and advice out there, and of course children are growing and developing all the time so what worked at 2 may not work at 5 and by 12 and 15 is something else altogether!
How can you choose which style suits you and your child best?
Of course our views about parenting are shaped by our own experience of being parented, sometimes we consciously decide to do something different, and sometimes we want it just the same as it was for us, and then perhaps we have a partner who might have had a different experience of being parented and you may disagree about how to do it. No wonder it’s so complicated.
In my experience of working with parents it can be helpful to find a way through that fits the parents as individuals and of course the children, I don’t believe that parenting strategies come in a one size fits all version. What worked brilliantly for your first child may not for your subsequent child and vice versa, they too have so many variations in temperament and sensitivities.
My work also involves talking these ideas through to help something emerge that fits for all the family.
My Background
I have four children and four step-children so I know that family life can be challenging.
I believe that good relationships are very important for the emotional wellbeing of all family members, and for the healthy development of children and teens.
When families work together, this can have a positive impact on everyone.
I also work with parents towards finding ways of co-parenting through separation and divorce so that children do not have to suffer from their parents’ differences.
